Sharks' long trip has a bad ending

The long road came to a disheartening end for the Sharks on Saturday night.

Working hard and not showing any signs of wear and tear for the nearly 7,500 miles traveled, San Jose finished with a 4-4 trip as the Flames got two goals each from Jarome Iginla and Daymond Langkow for a wild 7-4 victory.

"We played very well, but (Evgeni) Nabokov had a tough night and a couple of our defenseman did as well," coach Ron Wilson said. "We had a lot of people battling hard, and to come back the way we did we certainly deserved better."

Too close for comfort

A quick check of the side-view mirror only confirms the unease. Squint, and damn if it isn't still there. Off in the distance. No more than a fuzzy speck in the gathering haze, nearly out of sight.

But not quite . . .

That rickety blue pickup truck, big-ass Smytty at the wheel, and Hemsky and Horcoff and Rollie the Goalie and tough-as-old-boot-leather Gator piled in back, the familiar large Oil drop painted on each door.

Messier left his Mark on Calgary Flames

If Wayne Gretzky was The Great One, Mark Messier was The Grate One in the Battle of Alberta.

In the heyday of the Uncivil War, Calgary Flames players all recognized Messier's hostility in concert with his ability.

As much as Gretzky entertained, making the out-of-this-world plays and scoring the big goals as the game's undisputed No. 1 player, Messier was a double-barrelled threat who could beat you with his skill and his will.

Eyes still on top prize

The race is tight and the margin for error is slim but the Calgary Flames are staring straight up the road in front of them and ignoring the rearview mirrors.

A streaking Vancouver Canucks team has pulled away recently in the battle for the Northwest Division title, while the Flames have slipped to the eighth spot in the Western Conference.

Canucks have edge over Flames

It’s become increasingly evident the Vancouver Canucks have established a major advantage over the divisional rival Calgary Flames.

It’s simple. The Canucks are capable of winning on the road and the Flames are not, which is why first-place Vancouver holds a five-point lead on third-place Calgary in the Northwest Division, with the Minnesota Wild lurking between the two in the battle for playoff positioning.

Flames have lots to worry about

Spring is just around the corner for Calgarians.

You can tell because soon all those gophers will be bursting from their burrows and becoming roadkill.

Just like the Calgary Flames have been all season.

The scenario of the prairie gophers is easy to explain; not many rodents will win a battle with a car.

The situation for the Flames isn't as easy to comprehend.

Flames-Coyotes Preview

The Calgary Flames hold the final playoff spot in the Western Conference despite being tied for the fewest road wins in the NHL.

Recording one of those rare victories may be easier Thursday when they visit the Phoenix Coyotes, who they've dominated recently.

The Flames (31-21-8) have lost a season-high six straight on the road, including a 4-3 defeat to the Colorado Avalanche on Tuesday. Three of those losses have come beyond regulation and all but one has been decided by one goal.

Flames, Coyotes open home-and-home set in the desert

The Calgary Flames will attempt to end a long winless drought on the road, while the Phoenix Coyotes hope for a victory of any kind, when the two teams get together tonight at Jobing.com Arena for the opener of a home-and-home series.

Calgary enters this matchup with a poor 7-15-7 road record on the season, and the club's season-long struggles as the visitor is the biggest reason for its current third-place standing in the competitive Northwest Division. The Flames have also lost six consecutive away games, the most recent being a 4-3 setback at Colorado on Tuesday.

Flames rally around rule

Count Eric Godard as one player happy the NHL finally appears ready to tweak its instigator rule.

The Calgary Flames policeman, however, would like to see the league take a giant step further.

In fact, he’d like to see the penalty erased from the rulebooks, using the recent hit on teammate David Moss as an example.

Avs gain on Flames in frantic playoff chase in 4-3 win

All of a sudden, the Avalanche is chasing the Calgary Flames, who now hold down the eighth and final playoff position in the Western Conference.

Colorado fends off Calgary

One goal won't get Colorado Avalanche forward Marek Svatos out of coach Joel Quenneville's doghouse.

But it's a start.

Svatos scored the winning goal 1:24 into the third period and Paul Stastny had two goals and an assist in the Avalanche's 4-3 win over the Calgary Flames on Tuesday night.

Quenneville has tried everything to get Svatos on track — putting him on different lines, even benching him for three games. He's hoping this finally gets Svatos, who scored 32 goals last season, out of his funk.
